so originally I wanted to do kind of a bart/kitty/nathaniel mix because THIS TRIO is freaking flawless in every way. but the songs I found were kind of all over the place, so for the sake of album coherency, I ended up focusing more on nathaniel, although some of the songs are obviously about their amazing friendships.

1. “barlights” - fun.

i can’t help but remember james dean
see, we are part of the few who agree
that, hey, he lived fast, but he died, he died, he died
me, i’m gonna live forever

in my head, this song would come after the end of the golem’s eye, when nathaniel has completed exactly what he set out to do, when his confidence is at its peak, when the whole world seems to be opening before him. i think it’s absolutely brilliant that jonathan stroud can still make us root for nathaniel, even when he’s obviously being a bit of a prat. we want to see him succeed, not because we want him to become a power-hungry magician, but because we want that little boy who lived in an attic to stay safe. OBVIOUS DARK FORESHADOWING IN SOME OF THESE LYRICS.

but anyway, I really like cocksure nat, so we had to have a party song in here somewhere.

2. “i am not a robot” - marina and the diamonds.

it’s okay to say you got a weak spot
you don’t always have to be on top
better to be hated than loved, loved, loved
for what you’re not

this song is mainly from bart’s pov. he’s always so concerned about nat’s morals because he knows he is capable of better. there’s something within bartimaeus that makes him hope - beyond reason - that someone will prove ptolemy right, that someday there will be another magician who won’t be dragged down into the endless cycle of narcissism and ambition, someone who will at least be a decent human being - even if they never trust their djinn like ptolemy did. nathaniel’s youth makes him hope that HE’LL be the exception to the rule all the more. that’s one of the many reasons ptolemy’s gate is so tragic. bartimaeus gets his hopes up in spite of himself so many times, but nathaniel steadily grinds them to dust.

3. “the fallen” - franz ferdinand.

some say you’re trouble, boy
just because you like to destroy
all the things that bring the idiots joy
well, what’s wrong with a little destruction?

nathaniel starts to feel more and more pressure from his job. or something. idk.

4. “numb” - marina and the diamonds.

i get dark, oh, but i’m in hell
i need a friend, oh, but i can’t yell
yeah i’m no good, no good to anyone
‘cause all i care about is being number one

this song has always given me sickening nathaniel feelings. there’s just something so heartbreaking about the fact that he finally admits to himself how very, very empty and alone he is, how he has sacrificed everything to get to the top. his whole arc is just perfectly constructed, how he builds this identity for himself that is so profoundly NOT HIS, but when he finally gets up the courage to toss all that aside, he’s not really sure what he’s SUPPOSED to be. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

5. “england” - the national.

put an ocean and a river between everything, yourself, and home
you must be somewhere in london
you must be loving your life in the rain
you must be somewhere in london

this song is just so atmospheric and haunting. NATHANIEL FEELINGS. also: it’s about freaking england. definitely some nationalistic identity crises up in here.

6. “carry on” - fun.

we are shining stars
we are invincible
we are who we are
on our darkest day

i kind of imagine this song from kitty’s perspective, motivating nathaniel as she does so well. so ~inspiring.

7. “below my feet” - mumford and sons.

just give me time
you know your desires and mine
wrap my flesh in ivy and entwine
for i must be well

bartimaeus/nathaniel in the same body. there’s so much trust here, it makes my heart pang. just seeing how far these characters have come. *tears up*

8. “hero” - regina spektor.

i’m the hero of this story
don’t need to be saved
it’s all right, it’s all right
it’s all right, it’s all right

9. “king and lionheart” - of monsters and men.

and as the world comes to an end
i’ll be here to hold your hand

*SOBS FOR DAYS* this song is utterly beautiful. it’s so weirdly uplifting. POWER TRIO FEELINGS. the power dynamics between them are all perfectly balanced at this point. these three characters all love each other SO MUCH. and what’s so great about them is that they don’t ever have to say anything to that effect. they just prove it, over and over, so that it’s obvious they would all three die for each other. UGH NO I CAN’T DEAL WITH THESE FEELINGS. NO, WHY ARE THESE BOOKS. WHY DO THEY EVEN—

10. “long life (where did you go)” - great big sea.

it’s a long life
but i will not despair
i’ll open the door and turn on the light
and hope i’ll see you there

in which bart and kitty miss nathaniel. it’s kind of optimistic. i tried. ;_;
